West Wanaka – Holidays in Wanaka and Places to Visit
One of the great places near Wanaka is Glendhu bay 13 km from the town ship and on the west side of the lake. The Glendhu Bay holiday park is one of the few truly lakeside camping grounds which is popular with thousands of New Zealanders every summer. This iconic camping site is the home for many New Zealand families who return every summer to enjoy the water and lake activities while camping right on the edge of the bay. With the huge beach area within a few metres of their tents and caravan’s it’s not hard to see why this location is so popular.
Most families return year after year because of the very settled weather and knowing they will spend every day in the water, skiing, kayaking, paddle boarding or sailing. The access to a wide range of beaches nearby to Glendhu Bay is also a big attraction with families often spending the whole day at a secluded beach without the crowds.
On the way to Glendhu bay is the Mt Roy walking track which is only 6km out of the township, this walking track is extremely popular with hundreds each day walking during the summer. The track starts at Roy’s Peak carpark which is by the road out to Glendhu bay and climbs to the summit of 1578m, and for the average walker with moderate fitness would take you 5-6 hours return. The track zig zags its way up the hill and is well formed and easy to follow. Reaching the top greets you with stunning views encompassing most of Lake Wanaka and across to Mt Aspiring National Park. This is a great way to fill in the day and you feel like you have really achieved something on reaching the summit. A little further passed Glendhu Bay are the Diamond Lake and the Rocky Mountain summit walks both which are stunning tracks for scenery. The first part of the walk takes you to small Diamond Lake consisting of an easy 2.5km walk lasting approximately 30mins. After Diamond Lake the walking track takes a turn into an intermediate track with a steeper grade hill leading to amazing viewing platforms. The peak of this track takes you to summit of the Rocky Mountain allowing you to see Mt Aspiring and the main Southern Alps range. Total walk time is approx 3hrs providing one of our hidden gems well worth the visit.
